Italy's best classification - translates to "finest guarantee of origin". DOCG was introduced at the request of the Italian food producers, who believed that the DOC classification was given a little too often, to products of a slightly too fluctuating quality. The more restrictive DOCG classification was therefore introduced, and given to those of the DOC products which were of the highest quality. The DOCG wines are state-controlled and can be recognized by the eye-catching pink seal at the top of the bottle.
