Baco Blanc

Green grape. French-American hybrid used in Armagnac, in France. It was created by François Baco, in 1898, by crossing the American grape Noah, with Folle Blanche. Folle blanche was almost wiped out by a phylloxera plague, and the more robust and disease-resistant Baco Blanc hybrid took over from Folle Blanche. It is today the only allowed hybrid, of vitis vinifera (Folle Blanche) and vitis labrusca (Noah), in France's AOC vineyards. The grape was blacklisted by the EU and was not allowed to be grown after 2010, but due to the importance of the grape for Armagnac, it was allowed again in 2005.
